UN NGO Conference - Wrap Up

Members of the School Sisters of Notre Dame delegation at the 65th Annual United Nations DPI/NGO Conference last week are returning home with new ideas and a strengthened commitment to helping see the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The eight MDGs – which range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 – form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and all the world’s leading development institutions. They have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poorest people.

The United Nations also is working with governments, civil society and other partners to build on the momentum generated by the MDGs and carry on with an ambitious sustainable development agenda. The SDGs are expected to be adopted by U.N. Member States at a summit in September 2015.

At the conference last week, delegates approved a declaration, which outlines the areas that must be included in the SDGs.
