SSND Rides with Nuns on the Bus

School Sisters of Notre Dame rallied for voter education and mobilization on Monday and to support their own Sister Alice Zachmann, SSND, who is riding with the Nuns on the Bus tour in Minnesota.

The local YWCA sponsored the greater Mankato, Minnesota, "Get Out the Vote" rally both to honor Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, a YWCA National Woman of Distinction, and to support the mission of the 2014 Nuns on the Bus Tour.  The focus of this tour, "We the People, We the Voters," is to encourage all citizens to vote on November 4.

As life-long educators, SSNDs are committed to voter education and mobilization, said Sister Jeanne Wingenter, who is with the Shalom-Justice, Peace & Integrity of Creation Office in the SSND Central Pacific Province. School Sisters of Notre Dame from the Mankato area participated in the rally, giving support and encouragement to the women from Minnesota area religious communities, including Sister Alice, who rode with the sisters on the bus from Rochester, Minnesota, and will continue north to St. Joseph and Duluth and then back to St. Paul.

Sister Alice told the Mankato Free Press, that she joined the ride for two days to remind people that democracy deserves more than apathy.

"In the U.S., it's still a privilege to vote," she said. "We can't lose sight of that."

From there, the bus heads east to Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky and beyond. The sisters and many others present at the rally also signed cards pledging to vote and to encourage others to do so.
