School Sisters of Notre Dame

Atlantic-Midwest

Province

The Atlantic-Midwest Province consists of more than 550 sisters who minister in more than 30 dioceses across the country and around the world.

… we are sent to make Christ visible by our very being, by sharing our love, faith and hope.”

- Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger

Who We Are

As School Sisters of Notre Dame, the sisters of the Atlantic-Midwest Province are committed to the mission of enabling persons to reach the fullness of their potential as individuals created in God’s image. We seek to empower others through education in the broadest sense.

We are teachers, administrators and counselors; we are librarians, lawyers and accountants; we are nurses, facilitators and therapists; we are ministers, volunteers and women of prayer.

Our province is rooted in the School Sisters of Notre Dame’s earliest days in the United States. In 1847 Father John Neumann helped to start the SSND motherhouse in Baltimore, and the first schools in our province were established in the mid-19th century. As the congregation spread north, south and west, schools were established in metropolitan areas such as New York, Chicago, Boston and Baltimore. We continue to have an active presence in those areas today.

In December 2005, the Atlantic-Midwest Province was formally established by the joining of three longstanding provinces of School Sisters of Notre Dame in three distinct geographical areas of the country. After years of discussion, planning and preparation, the former SSND Provinces of Baltimore, Chicago and Wilton, Conn., had become one.

Today, the Atlantic-Midwest Province stretches from New England south to Florida and west to Illinois. Our sisters serve in more than 20 U.S. states as well as in Africa and Europe.

Our Leadership

In July 2008, the current Provincial Council of the Atlantic-Midwest Province was installed. Sister Kathleen Cornell (front row, center) serves as Provincial Leader. Others on the Provincial Council are (clockwise, from lower left), Sisters Paula Dukehart, Mary Ellen Dougherty, Joan Doyle, Barbara Bowers, Peggy Juskelis and Eileen Shea.  A new Provincial Council was elected in March 2012 and will be installed on July 14, 2012.
